Field Density Test · % Compaction
Sample Question
A field density test (sand cone method) gives a field dry density of 1,980 kg/m³. The laboratory maximum dry density from the Proctor test is 2,085 kg/m³. Is this embankment lift acceptable? Show how you decide, and state the required minimum.
Answer in your own words — explain your computation and your conclusion.
Model answer: % Compaction = Field Dry Density ÷ Maximum Dry Density × 100 = 1,980 ÷ 2,085 × 100 = 94.96%. The minimum required compaction for embankment is 95% of the maximum dry density (AASHTO T 99, Standard Proctor). At 94.96%, this lift is marginally below the requirement and is not acceptable as-is — it should be re-rolled and re-tested. (A strong answer states the formula, computes the value, cites the 95% embankment requirement, and gives a clear accept/reject decision.)
